In the summer of 2005, our pastor along with our daughter went to Uganda, Africa During their visit they went to a remote island to spend a few days with some orphans our church had been assisting. While they were there they saw many things, among them was the lack of very basic necessities of life- clean water, proper nutrition and a safe environment to grow and live. During the next six months the local organization in Uganda opened an orphanage for sixty children. These children came from islands on Lake Victoria. Simple houses were built and mommas were gathered to begin a new life for the children where they could experience a “family” atmosphere. It became our goal, first, to get them clean water to drink. In the next three months, two wells were drilled. For the first time in their lives, the children were not drinking the polluted water of the lake. Our pastor and daughter were scheduled to return in August of that year. With the knowledge that there was no electricity on the island to provide light and security at night this became a burden we felt we had a responsibility to overcome. We began to search for ways to bring light to an island on Lake Victoria that had never seen light. We investigated wind power with the understanding that we could charge a bank of batteries to store power and provide light and security for the orphanage. After numerous experiments we settled on a design that could be broken down into parts small enough to pack into a suitcase and be assembled on site with a few readily available supplies from the area. In August, as the team went, they carried what would become the first light the children would see. The day was scheduled for assembly and installation and without prior knowledge; a government official was planning to make his second visit to the island the very day a new light was to shine. His team discovered the mission and became very interested in learning how wind power could be harvested for light. He graciously agreed to cut the ribbon on this new thing and as night fell the sky was dimmed for the first time by the light on the ground. The children witness this new thing and spent many hours singing and dancing in the glow of it all. Through this connection with the government of Uganda, we formed a relationship and have now partnered with them on many levels, not only to improve the basic necessities of life but to challenge the human spirit to change and apply wisdom for a better life. The story in Uganda continues as of today, 2009, we are collaborating with those in Uganda and writing curriculum for producing not only electricity from wind, but the ability to covert water into energy through HHO generation for a better tomorrow in Uganda. |
